Maddy line produced the New York premiere of the American Repertory Theater's production of Crossing as part of BAM's Next Wave Festival in 2017. Taking inspiration from the diary Walt Whitman kept while volunteering as a Civil War nurse, the opera imagines Whitman drawn deep into a fraught, sensual relationship with wounded young soldier. The two men grapple with questions that threaten to tear each other—and their country—apart.
